What is a Prepaid card?
The Prepaid card is a smart and cost-effective alternative to carrying cash. It is basically a payment card where funds are loaded onto the card electronically prior to usage.
How does a Prepaid Card differentiate from a credit and debit card?
Prepaid cards differ from debit and credit cards as no credit approval is required. The transaction amount is deducted directly from the card account balance at the time of the purchase or cash withdrawal is performed.
Who can apply for the SBM Smile Prepaid card and where?
Anybody who is 18 years and over of age. Applicants have to call at any SBM branches.
What are the documentations required to apply for the SBM Smile prepaid card.
To purchase an SBM Smile Prepaid Card you need to call at any SBM branches to fill up and sign the SBM Prepaid Card Application Form.

No. After your card is ready, PIN mailer and welcome letter will be sent to cardholder via mail. Cardholder need to collect card at requested branch.
What are the different Prepaid cards SBM is offering?
SBM Smile Prepaid Cards are either VISA General Purpose, VISA Travel Money or UPI Travel Mate cards. Where can the SBM Smile Prepaid card be used?
SBM Smile Prepaid cards can be used at any merchant terminal or ATM displaying the Visa logo for VISA Travel Money Prepaid cards or UPI logo for SBM UPI Travel Mate Prepaid cards.
What amount can be loaded on the SBM Smile Prepaid card?
Customers can load a minimum of MUR1,000 to a maximum of MUR150,000 on SBM Smile Prepaid cards.
Is there any maximum amount that can be loaded on SBM Smile Prepaid cards?
Yes. A maximum daily limits of MUR150,000 or equivalent in foreign currency can be loaded on SBM Smile Prepaid cards.
Is a customer allowed to load an unlimited amount on SBM Smile prepaid card during a year?
No. There will be a n annual limits of MUR 500,000 or equivalent in foreign currency per SBM Smile Prepaid card.
How is the conversion done when I purchase the SBM Smile Prepaid card in foreign currency at the counter?
Your rupee will be converted at prevailing bank Selling Demand Draft rate of the foreign currency you will be purchasing.
Do I have to pay any fee when I purchase the SBM Smile Prepaid card?
You will pay only an account fee upon purchase of the card as per Bank's tariff & charges.
How does the SBM Smile Prepaid Card work?
The SBM Smile Prepaid Card can be used as a payment card for effecting transactions at merchants terminals or at ATMs (depending on card type), where the Visa logo is displayed for SBM VISA prepaid cards or the UPI logo for SBM UPI Travel Mate prepaid cards. Both your Card and PIN are required to perform a transaction whether at Point of Sales or on ATMs and the available balance on the card will deducted accordingly.
Can I use my SBM Smile Prepaid card for online purchases?
Yes, you can use the SBM Smile Prepaid card on the internet for purchases.
Can I purchase SBM Smile Prepaid card and give it to my child who will pay for his expenses whilst studying abroad?
Yes you can. The card account will be in your name and you will be accountable for all transactions on the card.
Can supplementary cards be issued on the same account?
No. The SBM Smile Prepaid Card will be issued to only one individual above 18 and he will be solely responsible for any usage on the card.
Can I transact in currencies other than the denominated currency of the SBM Smile Prepaid Card?
Yes, your SBM Smile Prepaid Card allows you to perform transactions worldwide, however, the appropriate conversion rate will be applied at the time of transaction.
What happens upon expiry of the SBM Smile prepaid cards? Are they renewable?
The SBM Prepaid cards are not renewed upon expiry. The card accounts are closed. Funds still lying on the cards will be refunded upon request after deduction of any bank charges.
I have balances remaining on my SBM Smile Prepaid cards which have expired, how can I get it back?
The funds will be refunded in Mauritian Rupees and converted at the prevailing exchange rate (Bank's Demand Draft Buying rate) after deduction of any processing fee as per bank's tariffs of charges upon request at any SBM branch within 6 month of card expiry.
What is the conversion process when I use my SBM Smile Prepaid card in foreign currency?
If you are paying a USD denominated bill with your USD card, there is no currency conversion involved. Your card is debited with the USD amount. If you are paying a USD denominated bill with your GBP card, there will be conversion from USD to GBP at an exchange rate which Visa or UPI will apply together with their charges. Your card account will then be debited with the GBP equivalent.
What documents are needed during reloading of my SBM Smile Prepaid card?
Proof of Identification and the physical card are required at the time of reload. In cases of a relative or friend depositing cash on behalf of the cardholder, a letter of authorisation from the customer is required. The relative or friend must also provide a proof of his identity.
When can I start using the SBM Smile Prepaid card?
SBM Smile Prepaid cards can be used after activation of the card which is normally the following day.
How secure is the SBM Smile Prepaid card?
All SBM Smile Prepaid Cards are PIN based, that is, a 4 digit Personal Identification Number (PIN) is required to perform any transaction on ATM or at POS. The foreign currency prepaid cards are chip-enabled to provide additional security feature, which makes the card totally secure.

In the event you suspect fraudulent use of your card or if it has been lost/ stolen, you can immediately call our 24/7 Hotline on (230) 202 1256. Furthermore, you can also phone on this hotline if you need any information on your card account.
Can I buy more than one SBM Smile Prepaid Card?
Yes, but you can have only one card of the same currency.
Can I withdraw cash from an ATM using the SBM Smile Prepaid Card?
Yes. You can withdraw funds on over 1 million ATM worldwide where the Plus/Visa logo is displayed for SBM VISA prepaid card or where the UPI logo is displayed for SBM UPI Travel Mate prepaid card.
Is there a limit to the maximum amount of cash that I can withdraw on an ATM?
The daily withdrawal limit for SBM VISA General Purpose Prepaid card is is MUR10,000 or equivalent and MUR20,000 or equivalent for both SBM VISA Travel Money and SBM UPI Travel Mate Prepaid cards. Some ATM Acquirers, however, set their own daily transaction limits. In such cases, you will have to perform the relevant number of cash withdrawals as appropriate.
Can an ATM be used to check the amount of funds remaining on the SBM Prepaid Card?
Yes, balance enquiry is possible on all ATMs displaying the Visa logo for SBM VISA prepaid cards or UPI logo for SBM UPI Travel Mate prepaid cards.
Are there any charges when performing cash withdrawal on an ATM?
There are no fees or charges for cash withdrawals made on SBM ATMs. However, a fee will be applied as per bank's tariff & charges for all cash withdrawals performed on non-SBM ATMs whether locally or abroad.
How do I make a purchase with my SBM Smile Prepaid Card?
At the time of purchase, you will have to give the card to the cashier and you will be asked to key in your PIN. A receipt will be printed on the POS machine and handed to you upon approval of the transaction.
Will the merchant charge me an additional fee for paying with my card?
No, the cost of an item is the same whether you pay by card or cash.
Will I get a periodic statement for my Prepaid Card account?
No, but you can call our 24/7 Hotline on (230) 202 1256 to obtain your transaction details. You may also obtain a mini statement of your last 5 transactions on any SBM ATMs.
How do I know the balance on my SBM Smile Prepaid Card?
You can check the card balance by calling on our 24/7 Hotline on (230) 202 1256 or you will be able to view your balance on any ATM worldwide where the Visa logo is displayed for SBM VISA prepaid cards or the UPI logo for SBM UPI Travel Mate prepaid cards.
What if I forget the PIN of my SBM Smile Prepaid Card?
You will need to call in at your nearest SBM branch and perform a new PIN request. A fee will be applied as per bank's tariff & charges.
Can SBM Smile Prepaid Card be reloaded over the phone, over the internet or from abroad?
SBM Smile Prepaid Card can be reloaded at any SBM branches, through SBM ATMs, internet banking or SBM Mobile Banking App. However, if the cardholder is abroad, he can authorise his relatives to reload his card by providing a letter of authorisation.
Does the card have an expiry date?
Yes, SBM Smile Prepaid Card in Foreign Currencies are valid up to 1 Year except Visa General Purpose ( MUR) Card have a valididty period of up to 5 years. The expiry date is printed on the face of the card under "Valid Thru". Once the card is expired, it cannot be used and you will be required to apply for a new one.
How is the SBM Smile Prepaid Card secured against unauthorised cash withdrawals from ATMs?
To effect a cash withdrawal at an ATM or even a purchase at a merchant terminal, you need to have both your card and your PIN to complete the transaction. The PIN is only known to you and nobody else. Hence your card is always secure as long as you do not disclose the PIN to anybody or keep the card together with your PIN.
What should I do to prevent unauthorised usage in case I have lost the card?
You need to immediately phone the hotline on +230 202 1256 to block the card. Once your card is blocked, you will not be liable for any fraudulent transactions effected after you have reported the loss of the card.
How can I get a replacement card?
You will be required to call at your nearest SBM branch to fill in your request for a replacement card. e.g cases of lost or damaged card. A replacement fee will be applicable as per bank tariff & charges and you will be provided with a new card and pin immediately.
Can I cancel the SBM Smile Prepaid card?
Yes, you may request the closure or cancellation of the prepaid card at any time by filling the cancellation request form and returning the card at any SBM branch, along with relevant proof of identification.
What is a contactless card?
Contactless allows you to make faster and secured low value payments by tapping your contactless-enabled bank card on a payment terminal without inserting your card into the payment terminal or entering your personal identification number (PIN).
How to make contactless payment?
Contactless payment can be effected at any merchant’s payment terminal bearing the contactless payment symbol.
When the merchant’s payment terminal prompts you, you are required to place your card within a few centimeters from the terminal. When the terminal accepts the reading, it signals with a beep, green light, or checkmark. Once the approval is received, the transaction is completed.
Where can I use the contactless card?

The majority of the SBM POS terminals accept payments by the contactless card.
Is there any contactless transaction limit I can use contactless?
The contactless card can only be used for transactions amounting up to MUR 2,500 per day (or the equivalent in foreign currency).
Can I use contactless to get cash out at an ATM?
No, you cannot get cash out of an ATM using contactless.
Are there any fees for paying with contactless?
Besides the standard fees and charges applicable to existing non-contactless card, there are no additional fees associated with the use of contactless service.
Can I use my contactless card abroad?
Yes, you can use your contactless card abroad. Contactless transactions will be accepted wherever the contactless symbol is displayed. Please be aware that the contactless transaction limit of MUR 2,500 (equivalent in foreign currency) may vary depending on the country in which you are transacting.
How can I get a contactless card?
You will automatically be issued a contactless card when your existing card is up for renewal or expiry. You will need to effect an ATM transaction or point of sale transaction to enable the contactless function.
What happens if the terminal is not contactless enabled?
Your card can still function as a regular card for Chip +PIN transactions.
What happens if I must do an online transaction?
Contactless transactions can only be done at physical terminals, which are contactless enabled. Online transactions will continue to be effected on the relevant platforms for online banking.
Is reloading of funds needed for the contactless features?
No, no loading of funds onto the contactless card is needed. The funds will be deducted on your account from the available balance.
SECURITY FOR CONTACTLESS PAYMENT
Could I unknowingly make a purchase as I walk past a reader?
No. The merchant must have keyed in the transaction amount for you to approve first, and your card needs to have been held within a few of centimeters of the terminal. You will also be provided with a RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) protection sleeve to protect your card.
Is contactless technology secure?
Yes. Contactless uses the latest secure encryption technology (same as Chip and PIN) so you can feel confident when using it to pay for items. There is a ceiling of MUR 2,500 on the aggregate value of transactions permitted per day, and from time to time, you may be asked to enter your PIN to verify you are the genuine cardholder. If your card is lost or stolen, please inform our hotline immediately on [230] 207 1111 so that the card can be blocked. You will not be held responsible for fraudulent charges or unauthorized purchases made using the contactless features on your card, after reporting the loss of your card to the Bank.
Why don't I need to enter my PIN or sign for purchases?
This is to ensure that using contactless technology is as simple and convenient as cash; merchants that accept contactless payments do not require you to sign or enter your PIN for transactions under MUR 2,500 (or the equivalent in foreign currency).
